Backdrop
From Nikonians Wiki - FAQs, Photo Glossary, Good Photo Locations, Help
The background in a studio, usually made of cloth or paper.
Size and position of the backdrop
Generally speaking, photographers like to have twice the distance between the backdrop and the subject as between the camera and the subject. This means that the backdrop must therefore be at least 3x the dimensions of the subject, and preferably 4x, because the camera-backdrop distance is 3x the camera-model distance.
The same is true for the height of the backdrop, in relation to the height of the subject.
In the diagram, a is the width of the subject, and b is the distance from the camera to the subject. The width of the backdrop must therefore be at least 3a, because the camera-backdrop distance is 3b.
