CD-ROM stands for Compact Disk Read Only Memory. A CD-ROM is a compact disk which is formatted for computer data rather than music. There are a number of formats, including hybrid audio and data disks.

Virtually all modern computers, except for netbooks and the MacBook Air are equipped with CD-ROM drives, since CD-ROM is now the main mode of distributing software including the operating system. Most CD-ROM drives also function as DVD-ROM drives, and a large proportion are also able to burn CD-R and CD-RWs, as well as DVD-R and DVD-RW, while some can burn DVDplusR formats. Very few computers are currently capable of burning blu-ray without external hardware.
