Dye-sublimation is a continuous tone or contone print technique, which produces prints which have many of the characteristics of images produced in a traditional wet lab. Budget consumer dye-sublimation printers are available which produce small prints, but printers capable of 10"x14" or A4 are substantially more expensive than equivalent photo quality inkjet printers.

The dye-sublimation process generally involves a specially coated paper, and a three colour ribbon. The two are normally supplied together. Professional printers, such as the Kodak 1400, also place a thin laminate film over the image, thus protecting it.
