Framing

In composition, the most fundamental decision of the photographer is how to frame the image, which is simply deciding how the scene will sit in the viewfinder. In many cases a photographer will aim to frame the scene perfectly in camera. However, one might decide to frame wider in order to:

  • allow space for subsequent cropping to change the shape of the frame to one more suited to the subject
  • allow space for use by a layout artist when Desktop publishing
  • allow space to ensure a good capture when the subject is moving rapidly or erratically
  • allow space for subsequent editing decisions

The shape of the final frame has a substantial impact on the composition.
