Kings Park

The jewel in the crown

  • Along the escarpment - any time of day, but early evening views of the city are stunning.
  • The botanic gardens - bring your macro lens! August and September are the best months, but there's something to see all year around.
  • The memorials and monuments. Not just the state war memorial, but all the smaller little monuments throughout the park. The Bali bombing memorial is very special.
  • The DNA tower - well worth spending some time.
  • The treetop bridge - stunning!

Beaches

Kilometres of coastline with beaches ranging from wide stretches of powdery white sand to rocky little coves. My favourite places are:

  • North Beach
  • Trigg
  • Marmion

Wetlands

The Perth coastal plain once had a continuous string of wetlands. Many of these have been lost to urban development, but there are still some wonderful places to make photographs.

  • Lake Monger - hundreds of black swans abound. They will eat from your hand, but can get quite aggressive at times.
  • Herdsman Lake - a birdwatcher's paradise. There are hides along Jon Sanders Drive, and boardwalks at the southern side of the lake. Beware of tiger snakes.
  • Star Swamp - the southern end of the lake (nearest the primary school) is a great place for really surreal swamp images.

The Bell Tower

The Swan Bells tower holds the bells originally from St Martin in the Fields church in London. This is a challenging photo site - the tower itself has some great shapes and textures, but it is difficult to get a good unimpeded view. Try getting in close with a wide lens. You can go up to the bell chamber, but the bells themselves are behind double-glazed panels, which makes shooting difficult. This is definitely a site for photographers who want to test their skills!

Pinnaroo Valley

The Pinnaroo Valley memorial park (off Whitfords Avenue) is the most beautiful cemetery in Perth. There are lots of kangaroos here, which are among the easiest to photograph. Also some good birdlife. Of course, this is a cemetery, so appropriate respect must be shown.
