The coast

There are a whole range of beautiful spots on the coast, especially between the two capes. Try to visit at different times of the day to get the best use of the light.

  • Cape Naturalist - the lighthouse is well worth a visit
  • Yallingup - Canal Rocks, Castle Rock and the surrounding area
  • Margaret River - check out the surfers - use a long lens!
  • Cape Leeuwin - beautiful rock formations. Also check out the fossilised water wheel

Caution

  • Many of the limestone cliffs along the coast are unstable and have been known to collapse - unfortunately with fatal consequences.
  • "King waves" sometimes erupt out of a calm sea, and have been known to wash people off the rocks.

Pinnacles Desert

Located within the Nambung National Park, the Pinnacles Desert is an area of strange limestone columns. They are best viewed at sunrise and sunset - I recommend driving up from Perth in the afternoon (about 180km north of Perth), view the sunset, then stay overnight at Cervantes. After your sunrise pictures, travel back to Perth through New Norcia.
