IF
From Nikonians Wiki - FAQs, Photo Glossary, Good Photo Locations, Help
In Nikon lens nomenclature IF denotes internal focusing, which means that the rotation of the lens for focusing purposes takes place inside the lens case, so that the front element does not rotate. This is only relevant (but hugely relevant) if using optical filters on the front of the lens.
• System filters, such as those from Lee or Cokin, will not benefit from being spun round, and may fall off. Also, the system may snag or slow focusing • Polarisers and graduated filters such as ND grads change their effect when rotated.
