A pose is a particular stance taken by a model or portrait sitter. The object of posing is to fulfil all of the compositional needs of the image, while producing a result which looks entirely natural.

A professional model is generally able to move seamlessly from one perfected pose to the next, as well as accepting verbal direction from the photographer to refine a pose, or create a new one.

A portrait sitter may struggle with the entire idea of a pose, in which case psychological aspects of posing come to the fore.
