Previsualisation is an essential skill for the photographer. It is essentially imagining how a scene will appear in the finished image, which leads the photographer to shoot in a different way.

When previsualising, the photographer takes account of six things:

  1. The influence of framing on the scene
  2. The influence of differential focus, and the focal point
  3. The influence of exposure, particularly when it will involve losing detail in the shadows or highlights
  4. Reworkings to the scene which can take place in postprocessing
  5. The limitations of the photographic process, such as noise, shake, choice of film for non-digital photographers
  6. The impact on the viewer of the elements thus presented
