Shutter release

The shutter release is the button, usually on the camera top right, which triggers the shutter. On most models of Nikon film camera, the shutter release was threaded so that it could be fitted with a cable release for mechanically triggering the shutter without disturbing the camera when shooting from a tripod. On current models, and on all dSLR cameras except the Nikon D100, external triggering must be done electronically, either through the 10 pin terminal on pro cameras, or by some other means such as infra-red, where supported.

Nikon pro series cameras also have either a vertical shutter release or the facility for its addition through an accessory grip.

Poor shutter release technique may cause additional shake.
