Silent Wave is a Nikon technology which improves the speed of autofocus, reduces the audible volume, and allows the user to adjust manual focus through the focusing ring while in autofocus mode. The Nikon D40 and Nikon D40X can only autofocus if a silent wave type lens is fitted.

Silent wave is designated AF-S in Nikon nomenclature.
