Softbox
From Nikonians Wiki - FAQs, Photo Glossary, Good Photo Locations, Help
A softbox is a large diffuser which dramatically increases the illuminating area of a studio strobe or, occasionally, a portable flashgun. In this way, it softens the light, giving a form of lighting similar to natural window lighting.
A softbox is most effective when it is used close to the subject, since the further away it is, the more it behaves like a point light.
In general, the larger a softbox, the softer the light it produces.
Where a softbox is unavailable, a shoot-through umbrella produces a similar effect.
