Spot meter
From Nikonians Wiki - FAQs, Photo Glossary, Good Photo Locations, Help
A spot meter is an exposure meter which examines a small area of the scene, rather than taking an average reading from the entire scene. A handheld spot meter will have a specified angle of measurement, such as 1˚, while the spot metering function built into most recent SLR cameras is based on a percentage of the frame, such as 1.5%, since a change in focal length will change the angle.
The spot meter assumes that it is measuring the midtone, and reports this to the camera.
