Sunlight is the most important source of available light.

The quality, colour temperature and direction of sunlight changes during the course of the day, and, outside the tropics, during the course of the year.

  • The golden hour, the hour after dawn and the hour before sunset, is generally considered very pleasing for many kinds of photography, because of the warm hues, long shadows, and the potential for a sunset or sunrise backdrop.
  • Midday is generally considered the poorest for photography, because of the short shadows and high contrast between sunlit areas and shade. However, in Winter outside the tropics, midday sunlight can work effectively.
  • Despite the attractions of direct sunlight, overcast conditions are often better for portraits.
  • When photographing people in direct sunlight, it is often advisable to use fill flash to cope with the inherent contrasts
