Variable aperture
From Nikonians Wiki - FAQs, Photo Glossary, Good Photo Locations, Help
Consumer zoom lenses, and older zoom lenses, change their aperture as they change focal length, so that an f4 at the shortest focal length becomes an f5.6 at the longest. This does not only affect the maximum aperture, but all of the stops when using a physical aperture ring.
Professional zoom lenses are now designed with constant aperture. However, this increases weight and bulk.
