Vertical shutter release
From Nikonians Wiki - FAQs, Photo Glossary, Good Photo Locations, Help
A vertical shutter release is a second shutter release built into large-body pro cameras, such as the Nikon F5, and in the D1, D2, D3 series of dSLR cameras, and available as part of the accessory grip in the Nikon F6 and in the D100, D200, D300, D700 series of dSLRs.
The vertical shutter reproduces most of the functions of the main shutter release, but is placed at the bottom right of the camera (when it is held normally), so that, when the camera is turned 90˚ counter-clockwise, it fits naturally under the finger without changing the hand position. In current Nikon cameras with a Nikon grip or built in vertical shutter release, only the ability to switch the camera on and off is omitted. This is replaced by the ability to switch the vertical shutter on and off to avoid accidental triggering.
Third-party vertical shutter releases are available for some models not designed to be equipped with an accessory grip.
