From Nikonians Wiki - FAQs, Photo Glossary, Good Photo Locations, Help
A zoom lens is a lens capable of variable focal length.
Fundamentally, there are two current Nikon designs of zoom lens: constant aperture, where the maximum aperture of the lens remains the same throughout its focal length, and variable aperture, where the aperture at the longest focal length is approximately 1 EV higher than at the shortest.
