ASIC
From Nikonians Wiki
Application-specific Integrated Circuit such as Nikon's EXPEED. This is a microchip designed for special purposes, such as imaging processors or hand-held devices. Using an ASIC leads to less components required in the manufacturing, reducing costs. Can also lead to performance improvements due to e.g. shorter distances between the integrated components and a reduced power consumption.
An ASIC can host many different systems on a single chip leading to reduced procurement efforts and a reduced supply-chain involvement in the production
An ASIC can protect intellectual property, differentiating the product from competitors and increases the barrier to entry.
