No. Nikonians is a not-for-profit community. All capital generated through our operations is reinvested to sustain it and its growth.
Nikonians Members support the Nikonians Community financially through a contributing Silver, Gold or Platinum membership. The Basic, free membership is our way to ensure that we can reach out to a larger audience, which might later on be interested in dedicated learning, getting the access levels required for that through a paid membership.
For the past nineteen years, the Nikonians Community's policy has made it possible to offer free of charge training material and content, enabling members from all countries, all social backgrounds and economical status to interact on the provided platforms at no cost. However, the community must also receive enough funding to be able to sustain itself and meet the demands of a growing membership.
Over the past decade, we have met those demands by assembling a highly skilled, paid staff that takes care of content, editorial and administration, accounting, software development, IT and maintenance (to name a few areas). The additional costs of operating a server cluster on more than one continent, clearly show that the current membership financial support structure is key to sustaining and expanding Nikonians. The Nikonians Community is therefore highly dependent on memberships, and in addition, it is supported to a lesser degree by donations. Since we stopped online advertising (aka "banners") September 25th, 2017 these two are the single sources of revenue.
The Nikonians Community is operated by a limited liability corporation, Nikonians GmbH, (with office in Germany) since 2000, whereas the Nikonians Academy (nikoniansacademy.com) is separated from it and operated by Nikonians North America, Inc., incorporated in the USA in 2006. This organizational structure was created by the two founders to be able to handle the size of the operation and the different demands professionally (with offices, employees, servers, et al).
The community is not a subsidiary of Nikon (it is completely independent in every way of Nikon Corporation) and completely independent of any other third party.
