Camera maintenance

Digital SLR cameras and Film SLR cameras require different maintenance regimes. Compact cameras require the least maintenance, which is limited to changing batteries before they are depleted and cleaning the lens and viewfinder.
Digital SLR maintenance
The following areas are user maintainable:
- battery maintenance
- External cleaning and inspection (eg, loose screws)
- viewfinder cleaning
- chamber cleaning
- mirror cleaning
- focusing screen cleaning
- sensor cleaning (though this is very much at your own risk)
The following areas are not user maintainable, but should be checked by the user regularly
- Mechanical action of the mirror
Film SLR maintenance
The following areas are user maintainable
- battery maintenance where fitted
- external cleaning and inspection (eg, loose screws)
- viewfinder cleaning
- chamber cleaning
- mirror cleaning
- focusing screen cleaning
The following areas are not user maintainable, but should be checked by the user regularly
- Film transport mechanism
- Focal Plane shutter mechanism
- Overall light-proofing of the film housing
- Mechanical action of the mirror
- Mechanical communication with lenses
