Flashgun
From Nikonians Wiki
A flashgun ("Speedlight" if Nikon) is a small, portable strobe light, usually powered by battery, which typically sits on top of the camera on the hot-shoe, or is built into most recent Nikon cameras except for the F/F2/F3/F4/F5/F6 and the D1/D2/D3 pro series.
A flashgun can be used for illumination, or to provide instructions to other flash guns, for example if it is equipped to act in commander mode in the Nikon CLS system.
Used directly from the camera as the main illumination without bouncing or light modifiers, flash produces a harsh light which is generally considered unflattering.
