Link shortener

From Nikonians Wiki

Jump to: navigation, search

Our link shortener My Nikona (my.nikona.com) is a utility to make longer URLs shorter (short links), easier to use and to remember. This utility is available to all members with a nikonians.org email address, i.e. all Gold, Platinum and Team members.

My Nikona requires its own registration, which is a very simple process. If you don't have a Nikonians email address yet, set up your Nikonians email first, then register at my.nikona.com with that address and follow the instructions on the screen.

You can create any number of shortened links, to any targets, but please make sure your links and target content are obeying our Terms of Use, and do not spam with lots of link to the same content, or you risk losing your access to Nikonians without further notice.

Please note

  • Only nikonians.org email addresses can be used when signing up at My Nikona
  • During signup, it can happen that the confirmation email gets stuck in a spam folder
  • There is no linking of account data between My Nikona and Nikonians
  • You can create easy-to-remember, personalized links, as long as that link isn't in use, e.g. my.nikona.com/bgs leads to the teampage of member bgs, one of the two Nikonians founders
  • The platform we are using is open source and we can consider this an Open Beta (November 2023), though the intent is that it will not need much of any change and can be used as is.

Some common questions

  • Why use this?

If you are creating posts on social media, writing blogs, articles or similar and you are linking to other web places this might be useful for you. If you do not, it will likely not be of any use. We are Nikon photographers and on platforms allowing you to use the short link from My Nikona directly, you can create memorable links which can be cool since then visible.

  • What about other shorteners from e.g. Facebook?

Twitter/X, Facebook et al are creating their own shortened URL's automatically, but if you are using a link from My Nikona and it is replaced by another short link by them, the statistics at My Nikona are still there and available for you to look at. Same goes for "hiding" the URL in HTML code on e.g. your personal blog, the link stats are still there, which might be useful.

  • Why the name Nikona?

It comes from the early history of Nikonians. We have the Nikona, Nikonia, Nikonian and, of course Nikonians domains. It is the shortest of these.

  • Is there a limit to the number of links that can be stored?

Nope, but do not spam, please. Spamming = Account blocked.

  • Can I as a Silver member, or Basic member use this service?

Nope, it is available to all members on Gold and higher, members who are having their own Nikonians.org email address.

  • I don't want to use my Nikonians email address

OK. You need to use it for the registration process at My Nikona though, but for nothing else. The Nikonians email address is a forwarding address only, forwarding to any of your regular email addresses. It is a unique, quite exclusive address. Wear it with pride! :-)

  • Are there any restrictions regarding domains that can be linked to?

Nope, any link and any domain with content that is OK according to our Terms of Use can be used.

  • Are any cookies stored?

Just a technical cookie to ensure you are staying logged in, nothing else.

  • Are any link statistics available for the links I create?

Yes, IP address, referrer (host), timestamp and a total use counter per link. You can see this data in diagram form when you are logged in on My Nikona. We are not storing or showing any geo-location or further details.

  • Is any usage data stored?

Only what you see for your own links, nothing else.

  • Can I edit or remove a link I have created?

Yes, see the dashboard at My Nikona after you are logged in there.

  • I have a problem using this, what shall I do?

Just contact us and we'll help.
