Announced in 2007, and generally available Winter 2007/Spring 2008, the D3 was Nikon's first FX or 'full-frame' camera.

It was characterised by

  • 12.1 MP FX sensor
  • Pro-style body with integral vertical shutter release, weather-proofing and metal frame
  • dual CF card slots
  • 51 point autofocus
  • Extremely rapid firing, at 9 fps, or 11 fps in DX crop mode
  • 25600 maximum ISO equivalent sensitivity, a figure previously unheard of
  • extremely good noise performance up to ISO 6400
  • EXPEED in-camera technology, including active D-lighting
  • Live-view

and numerous other refinements such as HDMI video output and a virtual horizon.
