What is done with the money from gifts and donations?

So far the Nikonians Community has run five fundraising campaigns; 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017 and a combined 2018/2019. We have just started our sixth campaign, celebrating our 20th Anniversary April 30th 2020.

We are asking our members and readers to support the Nikonians Community financially, in addition to any other support already provided, such as volunteering for writing, moderation and by paying for memberships.

The money we raised has been used to improve Nikonians; We have been introducing a new look and feel to the forums, we added multiple new functions, removed old stuff that was hardly being used and we ensured that the main sections of the site, including the forums, were working well on mobile devices. We further integrated the various areas some more, such as the galleries and articles within the forums. We also improved some of our apps. We have moved to faster servers, changed the infrastructure of the system including using a Content Delivery Network (CDN), serving all pages securely using TLS (SSL) and improved usability in general. 2014 and 2015 came with major overhauls and it has over all received very positive feedback from the members.

There is still a lot of work to do for sure and at a place like Nikonians, there are always a lot of ideas and limited resources for actual execution of these ideas. Our 2017 campaign focused on improving the way we are managing and sharing our photographs in the community. In this period we also introduced our portfolios and we dropped advertising completely, reducing clutter while emphasizing our independence of third parties. Oh, and we also introduced further enhancements for your data. You can e.g. take all of your data with you from Nikonians to other places on the net. This is related to us being compliant with the EU General Data Protection Regulations.

2019 is kicked-off by focusing hard on helping our members to get even more exposure of their work, to get valuable feedback and critique on their images and to consolidate our various knowledge resources.

We are convinced that our vision of being THE community for all Nikon users, with our mission that together we are making photography better, providing a friendly, vibrant, open and inspiring environment for all of you to improve your photography, to create your very own path while making new, real friends is the way to go in this current, often less than positive Internet environment.
