CLS
From Nikonians Wiki
Nikon's Creative Lighting System, built into the SB-5000, SB-910, SB-900, SB-800, SB-700, SB-600, SB-500, SB-400 and SB-300 Speedlight flashguns. CLS allows a commander to control multiple groups of flashes. The optical communication, available on all devices supporting CLS allows for up to three groups of lights to be controlled. With the later radio-based communication, introduced with the SB-5000, up to 6 groups.
It is basically a wireless control system allowing you to set up the system in a variety of advanced configurations from one main commander (typically the main flash on the camera). The commander sends data to the slaves using the flash light itself: Data is held in the monitor pre-flashes prior to the main flash (this cannot be detected by the eye as coming prior to the main flash).
The SB-800 supports the Creative Lighting System by providing the following main items:
- i-TTL flash control mode
- Advanced Wireless Lighting (Optically and later also Radio-Controlled)
- Flash Value Lock
- Flash Color Information Communication (Using flash and later LED light)
- Auto FP High Speed Sync
- 3D Multi-Sensor Balanced Fill-Flash
- AF (Autofocus) Assist Illuminator
- Modeling illumination
Later, the following features have been added to be included in CLS:
