Lock and Dam 14 near La Claire, IA
December - February
Lock and Dam 14 is located just south of La Clair Iowa. At the La Clair exit on Interstate 80 get off on US 67 south. Drive about 2.5 miles you will pass the Lock and Dam complex to your left. There will be a sign for the L&D you will turn left and then double back on a service road.
You will not be able to get right up to the Dam but you can shoot from a walkway along a maintenance lock near the parking area. The eagles will be flying back and forth, often right over the parking area, between the trees near the parking area, the trees in the park** and the Dam. If the water is not frozen it is possible to see fishing very close by in this area of calm water.
There are likely to be several eagles in the trees along the back of the parking lot. They are used to seeing people and cars moving around in the lot. With some luck you will be able to get a clear shot of a couple of roosting eagles.
You will usually be facing east or south east so the sun will be to your right in the afternoon and will set behind the trees at the far end of the lot.
- Note: In the winter of 2017, the two trees in the park (the photographers referred to them as the 'eagle trees') have fallen. We do not know how this will effect the eagle activity near the shooting area. We will have to wait until the 2017-2018 winter to find out.
