Posting Limits
From Nikonians Wiki
This section explains how many pictures you can post at Nikonians, and how big they may be. It also explains why these rules have been developed, and offers some suggestions on managing your image sizes.
NOTE: The limits given in this article may change from time to time. Please refer to the Nikonians terms of use for the formal official statement of the rules.

General principles
The user experience
You post your images on-line for other people to see, comment on and (hopefully) to admire. So it makes sense to present them to their best advantage. Remember - not everybody has broadband, and not everybody has a big screen monitor. So the number, size and "weight" of your images will impact the experience of those viewing them.
If your filesize is so big that the picture takes a long time to download, people won't wait. They will just cancel the download and look at somebody else's pictures instead.
You image dimensions should fit nicely on an average computer screen. We suggest no more than 1200 pixels maximum. Much bigger than this, and people may have to scroll back and forth to see the full picture. This does not show off your talent to its best advantage.
The number of images per post again impacts the viewing experience. Too many images will take a long time to download, and people will just give up. So instead of looking at a lot of your pictures, they won't look at any.
Image locations
Your image files may be:
- Uploaded directly into a forum
- Hosted on the Nikonians galleries
- Hosted externally
See How do I post images? for details on each of these options.
Image critique and discussion
Nikonians is a teaching/learning community. As such, when asking for critique or comments on photos, it is highly recommended that you upload or link only one image per post. This way, the discussion can focus on the creative merits, technical aspects and overall aesthetics of a particular image, always towards its further improvement. The information returned will be more valuable to you and to our members now and in the future.
It becomes less likely to receive in-depth, valued comments when multiple images are posted or when asking members to “review my gallery”.
In the effort to continue to help build our member’s skills and knowledge of photography, please limit yourself to one photo per post when seeking a critique or technical advice. General web site critique should be sought in the Website Creation Forum.
Forums
The following rules apply to pictures posted in the Nikonians forums.
Size of image
Dimensions
Images generally should not exceed 1200 pixels on the longest side. This is not a hard and fast rule, but should be regarded as a firm guideline for the convenience of viewers/readers.
Filesize
The file size ("weight") of any image file in the forums is limited to 300 kilobytes. You will get an error message if you upload a file larger than this.
Number of images
General rules
In each forum except those listed below, please post no more than three (3) images per post.
Exceptions
The following forums have posting limits different from the general rules listed above. In many cases, one image per post has been suggested to maximise discussion in detail.
- Sports Photography - Five (5) images maximum per post, where required to show a sequence of play or highlights from a single game.
- Constructive Critique & Technical Advice - One (1) image per post. The exception is that alternative views of the same image may be posted when seeking advice on a particular aspect.
- Fine Art Nudes - One (1) image per post. The exception is that alternative views of the same image may be posted when seeking advice on a particular aspect.
- Glamour & Portrait, Commercial & Studio Photography - One (1) image per post. The exception is that alternative views of the same image may be posted when seeking advice on a particular aspect.
- Black & White Film - One (1) image per post. The exception is that alternative views of the same image may be posted when seeking advice on a particular aspect.
- I want to sell - Five (5) images maximum per post, when required to adequately show the article for sale. However, remember that if your images take a long time to download, viewers will give up, and you will lose potential customers.
