In the photography and digital imaging industry "annotate" typically means to add visible data to an image, like notes or comments, lines and pointers, without modifying the master image itself. It can be very useful to annotate images when teaching students photography, or to share images in a team, e.g. among architects. Think of annotations as "document mark-ups".
Annotate! by Nikonians is a free program to add comments to images and to automatically email and exchange annotated images in a team collaboration effort.
