It can be very useful to annotate images when teaching students photography, or to share images in a team, e.g. among architects or engineers. Think of annotations as "document mark-ups".
Annotate! by Nikonians (Download the free software here) is a free program to add comments to images and to automatically email and exchange annotated images in a team collaboration effort. It is currently available for MS Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7. A Mac OS X version will be released in 2010.
Some characteristics of Annotate!:
- Very simple to use
- Community Edition available for free
- Does not destroy the original image - Annotations are stored as a new layer - a "glass sheet" on top of the original image
- No need to draw annotations: Just mark the area and type the text. The layout of the resulting annotations is done automatically.
