The EXPEED image and video processor is responsible for many tasks and it contains several processors on-chip. The EXPEED processor is an ASIC, System on a Chip (SoC) made by Socionext Inc. according to Nikon specifications.
This SoC is responsible for various image and video processing functions, such as filtering, demosaicing, noise reduction, scaling, sharpening, colorspace conversion, image compression, audio processing, face detection, framerate conversion and much more.
Every generation of Nikon cameras uses a different EXPEED processor.
Variants
EXPEED - First used in the D3 and D300, later in D2X, D700 and D300s. Marked EI-142. With reduced processor cores as in D90 and D5000 marked EI-149
EXPEED 2 - Used in the D3100, D5100 and D7000 marked EI-154. There is another EXPEED 2, the one to be found in the Nikon D3s based upon the EI-142 of the D3.
EXPEED C2 - Used in some Coolpix cameras.
EXPEED 3 - Used in D4, D800 and Df marked EI-158. D3200, D5200 and D600 uses a differently labelled EXPEED 3 marked EI-175. D5200 uses one marked EL-1131. In the Nikon 1 series of cameras, the EXPEED 3 based on an ARM microcontroller and marked EI-160
EXPEED 4 - Used in D810, D750, D7200, D5600, D5500, D5300, D3500, D3400, D3300.
EXPEED 5 - Used in D5, D500, D850 and D7500
EXPEED 6 - used in D6, D780, Z7, Z6, Z50. Dual EXPEED processors are in use in the Z7ii and Z6ii.
